Overview
The College of Science at San Jose State University previously housed programs in three older structures that were designed for a different era in scientific research. The new Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) represents a definitive move away from static environments with an emphasis on space for interaction and collaborative work and research.
Located on a constrained site, the ISB is an 8-story, 157,400 square-foot building that houses teaching and research labs for chemistry and biology, an interdisciplinary Center for High Performance Computing, and a data and science information lab serving the College of Professional and Global Education.
Our Approach
Southland performed design-build HVAC, plumbing, process piping, and controls systems. With a unique architectural design, the project required a custom 2-story 220,000 CFM AHU with runaround coils for heat recovery and a reclaimed water system.
Result
The ISB is San Jose State University's first new academic building in more than 30 years and it's first new science building in 50 years aimed to accelerate research and collaboration in Silicon Valley and beyond.
