City of Chico Phases I & II

Overview

The City of Chico selected Southland Industries to execute a phased implementation to replace old HVAC equipment and wastewater systems, reduce energy costs, and make progress towards net zero energy goals. With financial constraints and significant stakeholder involvement, the City collaborated with Southland to identify a project development and implementation plan to maximize the project goals and benefits. 

Our Approach 

Committed to sustainability, Southland collaborated with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) through the Sustainable Solutions Turnkey (SST) program. The Southland team spearheaded a comprehensive energy and infrastructure retrofit project to significantly reduce energy and operational costs, address the deferred maintenance backlog, and support the City in meeting its sustainability objectives outlined in the Climate Action Plan. 

During phase I of the project, Southland provided preconstruction services, project management, construction engineering, energy engineering, and commissioning services. Implementation measures included integrating new variable speed blowers at wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) aeration ponds, upgrading and expanding building automation systems, and enhancing HVAC systems across buildings with energy-efficient units compliant with current codes. 

During phase II of the project, 2.2 megawatts of solar capacity were installed to reduce the City's utility costs by over $650,000 per year. 

Result

The phased approach ensures the energy program is tailored to the City's needs, prioritizing Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) based on their impact and financial viability. 

Overall, the City of Chico's holistic approach to decarbonization and sustainability, coupled with strategic partnerships, including Southland Industries, has propelled significant progress towards near net zero electricity consumption, decarbonization, and a greener future.
