Overview

As Austin, Texas continues to grow, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is focused on construction projects to expand and streamline the operations of its airport.

The baggage conveyor expansion project included the installation of a new conveyor system, baggage service offices, a baggage checkpoint terminal, an Austin police department office, and a vestibule area.

Our Approach

Our scope involved relocating and expanding mechanical, plumbing, and control systems throughout the concourse and apron areas, as well as renovating an existing mechanical room to support the expansion. To facilitate seamless collaboration, we utilized BIM coordination across all trades, incorporating significant field input. This approach enabled us to tap into the expertise of our team, overcoming challenges and ensuring successful onsite installation.

The dynamic work environment of an active airport demanded careful scheduling and flexibility to operate safely and efficiently across both secured and unsecured areas. We also implemented nighttime shifts to minimize disruptions to flights and daily operations, allowing construction to progress without interrupting airport functions.

Result

Completed in January 2024, the upgraded system significantly improves airport operations while enhancing the experience for both passengers and employees. Throughout the project, our team dedicated over 24,000 labor hours to ensure its successful completion.
