From Intern to CEO: The Importance of Building a Strong Career Foundation

Southland Industries Staff Writerby Staff WriterJun. 26, 2025

In 1993, Ted Lynch joined Southland Industries as our very first intern. Today, he is our chief executive officer. Since 2011, Ted has led Southland's strategic operations and growth with vision, passion, and dedication. But, the valuable lessons he learned while working his way to the top provide a unique perspective and understanding of the business at all levels. It also continually supports his investment in early career experiences and opportunities.

Understanding the business from the bottom up

Looking back on his more than 30 years at Southland, Ted's rise from intern to CEO is not only a special individual experience, but has provided him with a unique perspective of the business from the bottom up.

"The fact that I've spent my whole career here and worked my way up from intern to where I am now is a unique situation. You don't see too many people stay with the same company that long. I never imagined myself as CEO and never planned for it. It's been an interesting ride, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be where I am today."

Since joining Southland, Ted has worked in many different roles and locations, including division leader, operations manager, and contract executive. Ted shared, "The opportunity to see all of the different parts of our business and to work in many different locations allowed me to understand the nuts and bolts of what the company is about and what we do."

Empowering the next generation of MEP industry leaders

As  the next generation of MEP industry leaders begins to rise, Ted reflected on his time as an intern.

"Since I was an intern, I've seen how our intern program has served as a foundation for many successful careers, including my own. I experienced firsthand how our investment in people, specifically our interns, fosters growth and excellence."

Early career experiences can often shape the foundation of a career and at Southland, we intentionally invest in the growth and success of our interns and recent graduate full-time employees. This programmatic approach empowers interns and early career professionals to develop their skills and shape their experiences.

With Ted as a continual reminder of what interns can achieve, we remain committed to investing and supporting early career opportunities
