Overview

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Maryland Department of Health was issued an Executive Order by the Governor to work with healthcare facilities to immediately increase hospital capacity in preparation of an influx of patients.

Following this order, the Maryland Department of General Services contracted to purchase and install STAAT (Strategic Temporary, Acuity-Adaptable Treatment) Mods™ as a self-sustaining, prefabricated modular solution for hospital-quality care. The STAAT Mods concept was created by HGA and The Boldt Company as a prefabricated, modular solution ready for immediate distribution.

Southland was selected to install the STAAT Mod Modular ICU Centers for two locations: Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center and UM Prince George's Hospital Center.

Our Approach

As the only prefabricated solution that has true Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms (AIIRS), the modular units are 7,000 square feet and have 16 private AIIRs that are equipped with medical gases, HVAC, dialysis ports, an electrical panel to accept normal and emergency power, and pre-wiring for IT connections. The rooms are designed with ample space to provide care with access to equipment.

Specifically, the HVAC system has a HEPA-filtered closed-loop system that reduces the chance of patient-to-patient transfer and risk of additional infections to patients. Using negative pressure, the areas surrounding the room are protected.

Once onsite, Southland connected the STAAT Mods and installed exterior ductwork for associated air conditioning equipment. Natural gas piping was routed in preparation for heating needs later in the cooler months and a plumbing/sprinkler container was installed with incoming domestic water and a full chlorination system.

Result

Through swift collaboration and backed by vast expertise, construction was successfully completed in under a month. Completed by the end of May 2020, the project added capacity of 16 beds at each location that could be configured for different uses, enabling patients to receive treatment in the applicable isolation rooms.
