Overview

Scottish Rite for Children is a leading pediatric orthopedic hospital dedicated to providing specialized care for children.

As a nationally recognized institution, this hospital relies on a reliable and efficient infrastructure to support its critical medical services. To maintain uninterrupted patient care, the facility required an upgrade to its electrical systems while keeping daily operations running smoothly. This included renovating an existing main electrical room that supports two buildings, A and B, on its campus.

Our Approach

We performed electrical renovations for the 1,200-square-foot main electrical room in buildings A and B, replacing switchgear, automatic transfer switches (ATS), a medium-voltage (MV) transformer, and bus duct. To maintain power during construction, we installed a temporary 2,000-kilovolt-ampere (KVA) 13.2-kilovolt (KV) to 480/277-volt (V) transformer and a 2,500-ampere (A) main circuit breaker (MCB) distribution board in building A's parking garage. This allowed us to transition existing loads from old equipment to temporary service before migrating to the new permanent system.

Our team leveraged BIM to coordinate construction activities, identify potential issues early, and streamline installations. Given the active hospital setting, we worked closely with hospital staff to schedule shutdowns, minimize disruptions, and adhere to infection control measures. We also implemented stringent lockout/tagout procedures to ensure safety for patients, staff, and our team. Prefabrication efforts further improved efficiency, reducing onsite installation time and noise impact.

Result

Despite a 52-week lead time on equipment, we completed the project on schedule. The upgraded electrical system enhances the hospital's power reliability, ensuring a stable infrastructure to support essential medical and nonmedical operations. By maintaining continuous service throughout construction, we helped the hospital provide uninterrupted care to patients. Our commitment to safety resulted in four years without recordable incidents, with over 30,000 hours worked.
