Project Overview

When St. Jude Medical Center was looking for a partner to design and build a 197,000 square foot state-of-the-art patient care tower and a 14,000 square foot central utility plant, they called on Southland Industries to design and construct the mechanical, plumbing and controls systems for the project.

The Fullerton, California based-facility established an aggressive timeline for completing the work, and an expectation that normal hospital operations would continue without disruption. They also wanted an energy-efficient facility that would minimize long-term operating costs while optimizing first costs.

Our Approach

Southland employed a BIM coordinated model to facilitate 3D viewing of design and construction elements for the many tasks taking place simultaneously in the field. The team also used pre-fabricated materials when possible to facilitate smooth installation, and integrated cloud-based collaboration tools like Bluebeam Studio to schedule and plan daily activities.

To ensure the new facility was energy efficient, Southland engineered a system that uses a heat recovery loop, allowing the tower, which contains a commercial kitchen, a dining area, 120 patient rooms, and 14 state-of-the-art surgical suites, to be served by only four air handling units. Southland also installed three steam boilers (250HP) and two 700-ton chillers in the central utility plant to serve the tower.

Result

Southland's design expertise and implementation of BIM coordinated modeling and prefabrication contributed to the project's overwhelming success.

Through design-build delivery, the Northwest Tower was completed five months early and more than 40 percent under budget.

St. Jude also obtained the kind of modern, efficient, and high-tech facility that patients of the premier medical center have come to expect.
