Overview

After breaking ground in 2017, the 1.1 million square foot Google Bay View campus aims to operate carbon-free energy, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by 2030. Bay View is an all-electric, net water positive campus with the largest geothermal installation in North America. The campus is also on track to be the largest project certified by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) under any of their programs at any certification level to incorporate biophilic design principles, a ventilation system that uses 100 percent outside air, and dragonscale solar skin. This project is Google's first project in which they led the creation of its own major campus.

The campus is occupied by nearly 4,500 high-tech employees and includes 2 office building structures, an event center, a remote 2,000-ton central utility plant, and a parking structure. The two office buildings and event center are connected by a common basement level, which houses the major mechanical and plumbing central systems. TI spaces include eight commercial kitchen/café spaces, a fitness center with massage and wellness areas, commercial laundry, game areas, and 1,000-seat event space.

Our Approach

Southland provided mechanical and plumbing progressive design-assist preconstruction and construction services. Our services included design-assist HVAC, 26 miles of plumbing piping, and pollution control units for seven commercial kitchens.

Result

Over a stretch of 1,128,760 million work hours, we successfully implemented best practices like effective communication and collaboration to install 155 miles of buried geothermal and radiant piping as well as 1.5 million pounds of exposed ductwork without any recordable injuries.
