Dulles, VA – Southland Industries has been awarded the design-assist mechanical and plumbing contract for the new Midfield Terminal project at John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) in Columbus, Ohio.
Working alongside the Hensel Phelps | Elford team, architectural partner Gensler, and mechanical design engineers Heapy and KLH, Southland will deliver both wet and dry HVAC systems as well as plumbing installations. With construction taking place near the existing operational terminal, the project will require meticulous coordination to avoid disruption to airport operations.
Scheduled to open in early 2029, the one million square foot terminal will replace the current terminal, originally opened in 1958, which now serves over eight million passengers annually. Designed to accommodate up to 13 million travelers per year, the new terminal will feature 36 gates, including 2 international arrival gates, and several passenger-focused upgrades.
Project highlights include:
- Two-level terminal with a third level for administration
- New 5,000-car parking garage and connecting pedestrian bridge
- Cantilevered entry canopy spanning four lanes of traffic
- 18 remain-overnight aircraft parking positions
"This project reflects Southland's growing footprint in both the aviation and transportation markets and our commitment to supporting infrastructure in central Ohio," Andrew Rhodes, Business Development Lead, said. "Working with the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and our partners on this landmark terminal project is a result of great coordination, and we're proud to play a role in bringing their vision to life."
