Fort Riley, KS – U.S. Army Fort Riley announced it has been awarded the 2022 Federal Energy and Water Management Award by the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) for the third phase of a multi-phased Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC). This is the first FEMP award for a Southland project.
United States Army Garrison (USAG) Fort Riley, ESPC Phase III project was awarded following Southland's implementation of $6 million in facility improvements across 48 buildings and approximately 1 million square feet.
Southland and Fort Riley collaborated and built a strong relationship to develop and implement a comprehensive program to achieve efficiency across the entire base. This program included incorporating ECMs such as: central chiller plant upgrades, infrared heating system improvements, building lighting and controls upgrades, and retro-commissioning.
The installed ECMs have greatly enhanced Fort Riley's ability to monitor and adjust facility operations from their command center, resulting in greater efficiency and sustainability. Overall, the Phase III energy savings totaled an astounding 22,369 million BTUs of energy savings in the first year, the equivalent of 1,939 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided, or 418 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the street. This energy savings equates to 26 percent in energy reduction in the buildings affected and a cost savings of $321,801.
With the ESPC, Southland Energy enhanced Fort Riley's ability to accomplish critical missions, while making a positive impact for service members.
"Southland Energy is proud to support Fort Riley in their efforts to reduce operating costs, improve infrastructure and resiliency, and to achieve their energy conservation goals," said Nello Tortora, Energy Business Development Manager, Federal. "This project significantly improves the facilities that support the soldiers and mission of the 1st Infantry Division."
