Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA)
Featured in the SMACNews January/February 2025 edition, the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center showcases Southland's mechanical expertise. This landmark project will house the historic Space Shuttle Endeavour, along with out-of-this-world exhibits and educational opportunities focused on space exploration.
As the mechanical contractor, Southland is fabricating and installing over 350,000 pounds of ductwork, 1,500 feet of double-wall roof duct, and 3,000 feet of welded piping. The atrium, designed to display Endeavour in its vertical launch position, features high-rise smoke mitigation systems and air distribution across multiple viewing platforms. Delivering these solutions in a tight, dynamic workspace required seamless trade coordination.
"The high ceilings and dense utilities meant we had to think differently. We've worked closely with our trade partners to share scaffolding and dance floors, ensuring accessibility and safety. These collaborations are critical to our success," Jesse Jong, Senior Project Manager, said.
Scheduled for completion in September 2025, this project demonstrates how innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving bring complex visions to life.
