Prioritizing Jobsite Safety in Data Center Construction

The Challenge

Safety is a priority on all our projects, but data centers require heightened precautions due to high-voltage electricity, heavy equipment, confined spaces, and extreme heat. At the Vantage AZ1 project in Goodyear, Arizona, we partnered with McCarthy Building Companies and other trade partners to proactively address these risks.

This project required multiple large crane mobilizations and coordination with a nearby airport due to its flight path. Our team also had to work around high-voltage lines and an onsite substation, while Arizona's extreme heat made mitigating heat-related illnesses a top priority.

Innovation through Practice - The 'Aha' Moment

To reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, we implemented cooling stations, extended breaks, night shifts, and specialized cooling for rooftop workers.

For moving 10,000-pound computer room air handling units (CRAHs), we purchased a Superpower Pusher paired with heavy-duty, 360-degree swivel rollers designed and fabricated by our Mountain West Division. This system improved maneuverability in tight spaces, enhanced safety, and increased efficiency. Instead of requiring 7 employees, the Superpower Pusher and swivel rollers reduced physical strain and allowed a CRAH to be moved 200 feet in just 5 minutes.

The Bottom Line

As of early 2025, the jobsite logged 2 million hours without a recordable incident, despite 213 days over 100°F. Our scope contributed over 260,000 labor hours to this achievement.

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) recognized this jobsite with its highest status, Star, in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) for its commitment to workplace safety. In 2023, Vantage honored the project with the Vision Zero Site of the Year award for achieving zero lost time incidents.

By proactively identifying risks and implementing innovative safety measures, this team set a new standard for jobsite safety.
