Engineering News-Record (ENR) Texas & Southeast

Featured in ENR Texas & Southeast Construction News, the Abilene Data Center project shows our design-build mechanical and plumbing expertise. Breaking ground in summer 2024, Southland Industries will support this multi-building data center campus in partnership with DPR Construction, HKS, and Rosendin.Purpose-built to support AI workloads, the facility will include high-density data halls and incorporate local renewable energy sources as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.

With an accelerated schedule, the project team will complete each 474,000-square-foot single-story building in less than a year. Originally planned for two buildings, the campus has now expanded to eight, with full completion targeted for mid-2026. Each building contains four 106,000-square-foot data halls connected by a central utility hall, with multiple halls under construction simultaneously — bringing each from start to energization in just 10 months.

In addition to significant electrical needs, the project addresses the high-water demands of modern data centers. Matt Tieken, Senior Project Manager, noted that the team designed a high flow reverse osmosis flushing system projected to reduce chilled water pipe flushing water use by 75%.

"That's going to be a huge advantage, not only for the client, but for the city of Abilene, so it does not have to supply us with this water," Matt said.
