This Year's ASHRAE David C. J. Peters Scholarship Winner

As a former senior vice president of engineering, Dave Peters was one of Southland's greatest contributors — not only in terms of technical innovation, but also for his passion for recruiting talented engineering students. Those that he led in Southland's engineering department remember him as an encouraging mentor, while just about anyone that knew him can recall his strong wit that was always accompanied by a lesson.

After Dave passed away, Southland established the ASHRAE David C. J. Peters Scholarship in 2011 to honor his many accomplishments and dedication to rising young engineers. For several years now, this scholarship has been awarded to some of the industry's most promising engineering students.

We are pleased to announce that the recipient of this year's ASHRAE David C.J. Peters Scholarship is Harrison Gray from the University of Nevada-Reno. Harrison is studying mechanical engineering and, following graduation, plans to begin his career in the HVAC industry.

"I have wanted to become an engineer since I was a little kid, but my whole life plan isn't quite laid out yet," indicated Harrison. As a native of Reno, he is currently participating in an internship that allows him to watch the development of his hometown and eventually hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father and own his own business.

Outside of school, Harrison loves to golf, ski, and play most intramural sports. He stated, "No matter the season or the weather, I try to find a way to get outside and have fun competing with friends." Harrison's ultimate goal is to live in Reno, Northern California, Washington, or Colorado. He feels that any of these places would be great for skiing during the winter and golfing in the summer.

Each year, the $5,000 the ASHRAE David C. J. Peters Scholarship is available to an outstanding mechanical engineering student enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program. To learn more about this scholarship, click here.
