Fort Riley Awarded 2024 Federal Energy and Water Management Award

U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Riley, Kansas, has received the 2024 Federal Energy and Water Management Award by the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). 

This prestigious FEMP award recognizes the installation for achieving remarkable success in driving significant energy and water efficiency improvements, while also enhancing resilience across the installation. As Fort Riley's energy services partner, we contributed to the installation's program through the design and implementation of a comprehensive energy savings performance contract (ESPC) that improved operational and energy efficiency, reduced maintenance costs, and improved occupant comfort. The ESPC efforts also addressed cybersecurity and net-zero water goals.  

"The improvements we've made through this project have advanced our energy efficiency and mission readiness," Michael Kerr Branch Chief, Utilities & Energy, shared. "The upgrades have allowed us to implement lasting changes that directly support our mission, our people, and our environment." 

Through the energy savings performance contract (ESPC), we combined advanced technologies, behavioral initiatives, and strategic partnerships across 450 buildings, including: 

• Lighting and streetlight retrofits 
• Enhancements to water systems and infrared heating 
• Upgrades to the central chiller plant and HVAC controls 
• Building retro-commissioning 
• Operations and maintenance of central utility plants for the performance period 

The partnership is currently producing $4.6 million in annual savings and is projected to save more than $146 million in energy, water, and operational costs over the contract life.
