Henry Nutt III, Business Development Executive, was featured on an episode of Digital Builder podcast from Autodesk Construction alongside host Eric Thomas. The pair discussed topics such as how empathy and vulnerability show up in jobsite leadership, how mentorship and leadership development helps to rebuild trust, the connection between leadership behavior, mental health, and performance in construction, and more.
The episode highlighted how the construction industry has historically treated people and management, including how getting the job done no matter what has inevitably come at a cost.
Henry stressed that leaders set the tone for their teams, which gives everyone else permission to follow. In an industry where vulnerability can sometimes be hard to come by, this can mean letting others know that you're having a tough day and checking in without having to make it a formal affair to better shape workplace culture. He also emphasized the need for organizations to be more intentional with their leadership training, so that they're able to successfully manage their teams and not lose sight of the people doing the work in the industry.
"If you're not intentionally developing your people, then you might as well recognize that they're walking backward in how they're running the projects. It's all going to come back at impact, so that investment is critical," Henry said.
