Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Collaborative Life Sciences Building & Skourtes Tower

Expanding upon Oregon Health & Science University’s (OHSU) offerings, the OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building & Skourtes Tower project comprised the construction of a state-of-the art suburban campus within the urban fabric of the South Waterfront location in Portland, Oregon. Housing the Dr. Grey Research Center, research, bio safety, and various laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, and retail space, the OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building and adjoining Skourtes Tower provide a premier education space for healthcare and dental studies.

As a fast-tracked project with extensive pre-planning and prefabrication, TCM utilized BIM and Lean processes to meet all project schedules. TCM also worked with MWESB (Minority-owned, Woman-owned, or Emerging Small Business) firms and local unions to meet all diversity goals with the exception of women participation — resulting in 22 percent apprentice, 23 percent minority, and 4 percent women.

Faced with some logistical challenges in the location of Portland’s downtown South Waterfront, TCM worked closely with the design team in a colocation environment to ensure constructability of the HVAC scope of work.

For this accelerated, multiphase project, TCM provided design-assist preconstruction, prefabrication, BIM, and installation of dry side mechanical HVAC systems. Additionally, they provided almost 5 million pounds of sheet metal ductwork, approximately 16,000 hangers, and 2,800 grilles/registers/diffusers.

Overall, TCM successfully contributed their local expertise to this project, which included: a 6-story South Tower, 12-story North Tower, an adjoining 5-story atrium, and a 2-story underground parking garage. Following completion, this project was certified LEED Platinum.
