Dulles, VA

Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest MEP building systems experts providing engineering, construction, service and energy service solutions, was recently awarded the University of Virginia’s Gilmer Hall and Chemistry Building Renovation in Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to Southland, the design-assist project team includes Perkins+Will, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Integral Group, and WFT Engineering.

Totaling 355,000 square feet, the project will improve the quality and utilization of teaching and research space, create greater opportunities for collaboration across disciplines, and accommodate increasing enrollment, once completed. The renovation of Gilmer Hall will result in space for 34 psychology research teams and multi-discipline, open wet-lab environments for 10 research units, while the renovation of the Chemistry Building will provide new instructional labs and support spaces.

Working collaboratively with the project team to maintain project safety, budget, and schedule, Southland will perform mechanical, plumbing, and process system services for both buildings. This involves the replacement of antiquated, inefficient dual duct supply and constant volume lab exhaust systems with new, variable air volume HVAC systems and controls. Through the replacement of obsolete mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, both facilities will be updated in a safe and energy efficient fashion.

With a goal of LEED certification, the project’s deign phase is scheduled to begin this week. The construction phase is expected to commence in November 2015, and overall project completion is anticipated by 2020.
