Southland Industries, one of the nation’s largest MEP building systems experts providing engineering, construction, service and energy service solutions, was recently awarded the Proton Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. In addition to Southland, the design-assist project team includes VOA Associates, Brasfield and Gorrie, and MC Dean.
Totaling 80,000 square feet, the new three-story proton therapy center will include a number of outpatient treatment, clinical and general exam rooms, as well as an imaging department with MRI and CT suites among the proton therapy space. Southland will provide services such as sheet metal, HVAC piping, plumbing, various medical gases including nitrogen, oxygen, and instrument air, and process cooling water for proton therapy equipment. Additionally, Southland’s scope of work will incorporate upgrades of the current central utility plant to utilize existing chilled water and high-pressure steam systems.
With a goal of LEED Silver certification, the project is currently in design. The construction phase is expected to commence in August 2016 and conclude in June 2019.
