Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest building systems experts providing holistic solutions to optimize each stage of the building lifecycle, was recently presented with the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Western Pacific Region’s Design-Build Project of the Year and Design Excellence Award. The seventh annual Design-Build Awards Competition honored projects signifying excellent implementation of design-build techniques that met or exceeded the owner’s expectations.
To qualify for a Western Pacific Region DBIA award, projects must be executed successfully using design-build delivery, demonstrate early collaboration amongst trades during preconstruction and design, as well as exhibit contractual acceptance of single-entity risk within the design-build team. Furthermore, winning projects must exhibit advanced and innovative applications of total integrated project delivery, while finding unique solutions for the project’s challenges.
Southland provided design-build HVAC and plumbing services for the Los Angeles Mission College East Campus Complex. Consisting of a new 98,700 square foot lab building and 5,300 square feet central utility plant, the project utilized 3D building information modeling for successful coordination and assistance in achieving the fast-track project schedule. Southland’s innovative, yet practical solution for this project included a HVAC system using 100% outside air and a measurement and verification plan to document energy savings. By utilizing sustainable construction and renewable energy such as photovoltaic array, this project is expected to receive Platinum LEED certification.
