As a former senior vice president of engineering, Dave Peters was one of Southland’s greatest contributors—not only in terms of technical innovation, but also for his passion for recruiting talented engineering students. After Dave passed away, the ASHRAE David C. J. Peters Scholarship in 2011 was created to honor his many accomplishments and dedication to rising young engineers. For several years now, this scholarship has been awarded to some of the industry’s most promising engineering students.

This year, at the International Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition it was announced that Delta Controls won the ControlsTrends “Building Automation System of the Year” award. This does not surprise me, as I have worked with the Delta product for almost ten years and Southland Industries’ partnership with Delta has been in existence about a decade, too.

In 2013, I embarked on a ten-month leadership and self-development journey within Southland Industries, called Built to Lead. I remember excitedly listening in during the program’s kick-off meeting conference call in early January 2013, recognizing only one other name in the group, but looking forward to the year ahead packed with team meetings, coaching, leadership development and a little bit of fun. In July 2013 Southland Industries launched an entirely new brand. This brand came to life by way of Southland restructuring its approach to the market and offering customers more flexibility in contracting building systems expertise. The cornerstone of this change is the company’s brand identity, starting with the logo.
