The Moustached Month of Movember

For the second year in a row, Southland Industries participated in the Movember Foundation’s annual competition. An abbreviation of “moustache” and “November,” Movember is a month-long campaign for which men and women across the globe join together to raise awareness and funds for men’s health.

On the first day of the month, every man is asked to start clean-shaven. As the month continues, each participant grows a moustache as a banner to encourage conversation about men’s health. There are times in the process where the moustache is uncomfortable and embarrassing—these moments often elicit the most questions leading to positive discussions. By the end of the month, we see the moustaches reach maturity and these lip adornments become a source of pride for the wearer. Not only are they shining examples of classic manliness, but they are also a sign of support, perseverance, and humility.

Movember began in 2003 when two friends in Melbourne, Australia were discussing recurring fashion trends. They wondered what had happened to the moustache and joked about bringing it back. They began to ask their friends to grow moustaches, too. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make their moustache growing about men’s health and prostate cancer.

Three years later, after raising $1.2 million dollars for men’s health, they established an official charity: The Movember Foundation. The charity recognizes that the poor state of men’s health is largely due to a lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face and that men are often reluctant to take action when they do not feel physically or mentally well. So, as the years went on, the moustache became a symbol for a cause that previously received little attention.

In Southland’s first year of participation it raised around $800. This year, with a companywide push for participation, Southland raised $5,984 for men’s health and contributed to the Movember 2014 worldwide total of $70,378,576 raised.
