As part of Northern California Division’s community efforts, Southland volunteered at San Francisco’s CityBuild Academy, an apprenticeship initiative for economically disadvantaged bay area residents. Southland’s piping/plumbing teams went to the CityBuild Academy to teach students with a hands-on copper tube project. The copper tube was actually a handle for a sheet metal tool box that the students created the following week with Southland’s sheet metal team. Overall, the future apprentices and journeymen were very excited to be exposed to Southland’s real-world experience. Student, Wings Lam stated, “We all learned a lot just in a couple of hours. We all appreciate your time. Thanks, Southland, for making our dream become more realistic.”
Moving forward for 2013, Southland will be working with Rebuilding Together, a national organization that rehabilitates homes for low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities. The division is raising money to take part in the initiative through football parlays, an NCAA tournament, poker games, and an annual bowling night. In addition the division’s monetary sponsorship of Rebuilding Together, Southland employees will provide critical repairs and renovations for a home in the Bay Area.
