Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB)

At Southland, we aspire to build a workforce that represents the diversity of the people who occupy the buildings we design, build, and maintain. By focusing on people first, we ensure all employees, customers, subcontractors, and vendors feel valued and included to bring their authentic self to the table every day.

Our Commitment

Based on our core values and overall commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), our DEIB goals are driven by specific actions and strategic efforts.

To build better careers and relationships, we create a safe, collaborative, and inclusive work environment. This means cultivating an environment that fosters growth, encourages professional achievement, and treats all employees honestly and fairly. We also provide the necessary support and resources to achieve these specific goals.

What are we doing?

  1. Strategy Integration: Embedding DEIB into all people and business objectives to propel achievement of Southland’s strategic objectives
  2. Inclusion, Engagement & Retention: Strengthening inclusive leadership and behaviors and celebrating our differences with intentional focus on keeping top talent
  3. DEIB Learning: Educating all employees with meaningful and audience-specific content, setting baseline expectations for awareness and behaviors
  4. Recruiting Outreach: Building relationships with communities and organizations to develop a diverse workforce
  5. Community & Supplier Relationships: Building lasting relationships with the communities we work in and our customer and project partners, such as general contractors, architects, engineers, trade partners, owners, and more to create work acquisition opportunities for diverse and local suppliers

How are we doing it?

We execute our DEIB efforts strategically by being accountable, caring, and by working together. Our commitment to DEIB is just the beginning — to effectively integrate DEIB into our everyday actions, we must make a concerted effort.

Culture of Care Pledge

Southland CEO Ted Lynch took the Culture of CARE Pledge, which states his belief that every individual has the right to work in an environment that is free from harassment, hazing, and bullying. Read more about his commitment and the Culture of CARE initiative here.

Celebrating Diversity

Throughout the year, Southland celebrates heritage months and promotes awareness holidays such as Black History Month, Women in Construction Week, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and many more.

To highlight employees and raise their voices, we encourage participation through curated learnings and resources, dedicated events, and discussion forums.

Outreach & Organizations

We know that real change happens on the ground. In addition to our company-wide initiatives, Southland is a proud sponsor of Catalyst and was certified by Great Place to Work® in 2021.
Who do we work with?

We work with national and local organizations, including CityBuild Academy, Northern California SMACNA Women in Construction group, Tradeswomen, Inc., Helmets to Hardhats, and many more.

Real change means forging new paths too. We also participated in the inaugural Construction Inclusion Week, joining other industry leaders in identifying ways to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in construction.
