Kaiser Downey Hospital

Overview

Located south of downtown Los Angeles, Kaiser Downey Medical Center is a 651,000 square foot acute care hospital intended to provide the local community with a new level of healthcare. The facility includes a seven-story patient tower with 352 beds, a four-story diagnostic and treatment facility, as well as a central plant consisting of a 3,300 ton chilled water system, 1,500 horse power heating hot water system and 300 horse power high pressure steam system. Special attention and planning was required to accommodate spaces such as negative pressure isolation rooms, operating rooms, and ICU/CCU beds, as well as nuclear medicine and interventional radiology areas where MRIs and CT scans are performed.

Approach

Southland’s design-build approach in providing mechanical services for the project ensured that the engineering and construction teams coordinated efforts early on in the planning process. This saved resources, while maintaining a high level of quality in the delivery of medical gas systems such as medical air, medical vacuum, and lab air. Southland’s scope of work also included an emergency 30,000 gallon water storage tank with an ozone generator, direct digital control systems, an air handling unit with 100 percent constant air volume with heat recovery coils and recirculating pumps, as well as decontamination waste and clean steam systems.

Result

Southland completed the hospital and central plant five months ahead of schedule, and the use of ProPress fittings allowed the team to create a unique design for virtually every mechanical systems application, reducing the cost of constructability. Additionally, all of Southland’s mechanical systems were designed to enhance owner usability and generate energy savings where possible.
