Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest MEP building systems experts providing engineering, construction, service and energy service solutions, was recently awarded the Moscone Convention Center Expansion project in San Francisco, California. In addition to Southland, the design-assist project team includes Webcor Construction, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, WSP Group, Rosendin Electric, and Costco Fire Protection.
At one million square feet, the existing Moscone Convention Center, owned by the San Francisco Department of Public Works, provides the largest convention and exhibition space in the city. Currently responsible for 21 percent of San Francisco’s tourism revenue, the expansion project aims to increase this space by 550,000 square feet. By implementing the project in several phases, the convention space will remain operational throughout construction of the expansion. Southland will provide design-assist mechanical and plumbing services and, during the preconstruction phase, will identify and produce plans to preserve operability of the systems affected by the demolition.
With a goal of LEED platinum, the project is currently in the design phase and is scheduled to begin construction in January 2015. Overall project completion is slated for the summer of 2018.
