The U.S. Department of Energy projects that by the end of 2015, 23 states (many of which are concentrated on the East and West Coast) will adopt the 2012 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) in which ASHRAE 90.1-2010 is heavily referenced. As published in the Federal Register last year, ASHRAE 90.1-2010 will also apply to all federal buildings beginning on July 9, 2014.

I recently had the opportunity to participate as part of a panel during ENR's Future Tech Conference. My group, consisting of five panelists from various businesses, kicked off the two-day conference by discussing an initiative each of our respective companies has been working on, followed by a question and answer segment.

Along with various speaking engagements and teaching opportunities at select universities throughout the school year, Southland participates in the annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 6 & 7 Competition held in Sparks, Nevada.Through a coalition of peers, we sponsor the competitive Mechanical Problem at the competition.

With the focus of the campaign being “Get Your Hands Dirty,” the campaign centered around the opportunity to gain hands-on experience that prospective hires would receive with Southland. This message was chosen because it highlights our primary goal for each and every student that chooses to take on a Southland internship or co-op experience.
